The need for a holistic approach, adopting Gandhian philosophy of empowering communities and addressing the weaker sections based on their skill and resources have been highlighted in the book “Gandhian Approach to Rural Prosperity”.

The book, authored by Dr Narayan Hegde, Trustee, MSSRF and Principal Advisor and Trustee, BAIF was released on Saturday, by former West Bengal Governor and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Professor Swaminathan presided over the function that took place at the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai.

The book spread over 16 chapters, covers the rural development initiatives of Mahatma Gandhi and subsequently, the programmes initiated by the Government of India and various Non-Government Organisations across the country.

Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi appreciated the efforts of the author in reminding everyone of the need to go back to Gandhian values and principles to solve the problems of the world.

Professor M S Swaminathan in the foreword to the book, remarks “This book gains in value since it is based on practical experience and not just on theoretical postulates. The Sarvodaya approach assumes particular relevance today in the context of growing social and gender inequity. The urban – rural divide in terms of access to basic amenities like education, roads, toilets, sanitation and healthcare is increasing. This is one of the principal causes for the persistence of poverty and hunger.”

Dr. Narayan Hegde has in the book, summarized the approach of BAIF in providing food security and sustainable livelihood to rural poor especially through management of natural resources.  He has also shown the means by which younger generations can be attracted and retained in farming and allied activities and how poverty can be reduced and eliminated through sustainable livelihoods.  The book further highlights the need for providing solutions to specific problems at the micro-level.

The book will serve as a reference manual for Government and Non-Government Organisations engaged in food security, natural resource management and rural development across the country.
