Nutri-gardens at anganwadis to foster improved nutrition outcomes
(Inauguration of nutri-garden programme at Kalpetta anganwadi)
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in collaboration with Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) and Block Panchayat, Kalpetta has undertaken a multidimensional effort to reduce child malnutrition. In this regard, a programme on ‘Anganwadi Nutrition Garden’ was organised in Kalpetta on Januay 7, 2019, to demonstrate model Anganwadis in the district for profound child nutrition outcomes and improved nutrition literacy.
This model can be replicated in other Anganwadis in the state as well. Fifty Anganwadis from Kalpetta Block panchayat have been selected for the initiative. The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Usha Thampi, Block Panchayat President of Kalpetta by handing over the Home Nutrition Garden plant kit to Ms. Sreeja, Anganwadi worker. She pointed in the inaugural talk that the home nutrition gardens not only assures food security but also food safety.
This convergence was made effective with the support of Department of Science and Technology along with the Food and Nutrition Security Initiative of MSSRF, for addressing the malnutrition of Adivasi community in Wayanad.
Dr. C.S. Chandrika, Principal Scientist, MSSRF delivered a lecture on the role and scope of Anganwadis in achieving Nutrition Security. Mr. P. Vipindas, Development Associate, MSSRF, mentioned the role of Nutrition Garden as a locally anchored and sustainable solution to malnutrition. One hundred and fifty Anganwadi workers and ICDS staffs took part in the programme. Ms.M.N. Sudha, Child Development Programme Officer, ICDS, expressed the vote of thanks.
