Chennai Corporation, MSSRF Advance Action Plan for Stronger Waste Management and Environmental Health
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) jointly convened a stakeholder consultation to discuss Chennai's solid waste management and environmental health priorities. Held over two days on 7 and 8 October, the consultations were part of CLEAR (Clean Land, Equitable Air and Resilience), a project led by MSSRF in collaboration with IIT Madras and Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research.
Chaired by the GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, the deliberations brought together leadership from the Corporation's solid waste management and public health departments, along with conservancy workers, sanitary inspectors, health inspectors, engineers, and field staff. Discussions focused on reducing solid waste and air pollution, addressing implementation challenges across zones, lessons from waste audits and field inspections, and identifying wards and zones for interventions over the next four years.
The consultations also highlighted capacity-building needs across the workforce, recognising the critical role of frontline staff in ensuring effective waste management and public health outcomes.
As part of the engagement, the teams visited the GCC's Integrated Command and Control Centre to understand how solid waste management operations and air quality data are monitored and coordinated in real time.
The CLEAR project explores the connections between solid waste management, air pollution, climate-related risks, and public health. Insights from these consultations will inform the design and implementation of pilot interventions in selected wards and zones. By bringing together evidence, technology and frontline experience, the initiative aims to support more effective waste management systems and contribute to a cleaner, healthier and more climate-resilient Chennai.
