Mina Swaminathan Media Fellow 2020

The M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) was established in 1988 as a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M. S. Swaminathan. The Foundation aims to accelerate use of modern science for agricultural and rural development for development and dissemination of technology to improve lives and livelihoods of tribal and rural communities. MSSRF follows a pro-poor, pro-women and pro-nature approach and applies appropriate science and technology options to address practical problems faced by rural populations in agriculture, food and nutrition.

About Fellowship: 
The Mina Swaminathan Fellowship instituted by Prof M S Swaminathan, aims to intensify focus on the gender theme in MSSRF, in recognition of Mrs Mina Swaminathan’s contribution to operationalizing gender and development. MSSRF began a gendered approach to research and development under Mrs Mina Swaminathan, nationally known for her contributions towards a holistic view on gender equality and child development, including the ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services), which takes account of the multiple needs and roles of women. The Mina Swaminathan Media Fellowship is to recognize focus on issues of gender and development, particularly in the rural context. The first call is for Odia, Malayalam and Tamil journalists.
Job Description: 

Over a three-month period after receiving the award, the Fellow is expected publish i) two well-researched articles in mainstream media, ii) produce a policy brief on the theme of the year and iii) deliver a seminar on their work. The Fellows will be identified through a call / search and finalized by an expert committee set up for the purpose.

  1. Consistent writing on the subjects of gender, development, environment and rural concerns over the past six months
  2. Additional stories or recent published articles related to COVID and their work on gender dimension will be an added advantage
  3. Full-time / part-time journalist / contributor with regular publication standing in popular mainstream media platforms – print, and / or web.
  4. Language – For 2020, three journalists will be selected, from Tamil, Malayalam and from Odia media.
  5. Proficient linguistic skills through their media work.
Consolidated Fellowship Award of Rs 50,000 and Citation

Mode of Application : 

Applications to be submitted with the following enclosures: Covering letter with statement of motivation on applying for the Fellowship, a profile / CV of not more than three pages, writing samples in the language for which the Fellowship is being applied for, samples should have been published over the previous one year, covering gender, development and / or COVID-19. (maximum five samples including original links), two letters of references from experts familiar with the work of the applicant. The decision of the Selection Committee will be final.
