Soil Salinization and Sustainable Food Systems

M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation is organizing the virtual event on World Soil Day(WSD) on 7 December 2021. Experts from prestigious agriculture universities from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka participated in the virtual event organized at the Foundation Headquarter Chennai.

World Soil Day (WSD) is celebrated annually on 5 December to provide due attention to maintain healthy soil and adopt sustainable management of soil resources.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. In December 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly declared 5 December as World Soil Day. The Global Soil Partnership and FAO supported the formal establishment of WSD as a global awareness-raising platform.

Senior scientists at the Foundation and experts will discuss the ongoing research progress and the key learnings to address the World Soil Day, 2021 focus on “Halt soil salinization and Boost Crop Productivity.”

M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation has advocated sustainable soil health management to boost productivity, combat desertification, and promote soil biodiversity aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals, Biodiversity, and Climate Change frameworks. The key research areas are

  • management and impacts of coastal soil salinity,
  • biological soil health assessment,
  • mapping and monitoring of soil health and management measures
