Development Associate – Communication

The M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) was established in 1988 as a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M. S. Swaminathan. The Foundation aims to accelerate use of modern science for agricultural and rural development for development and dissemination of technology to improve lives and livelihoods of tribal and rural communities. MSSRF follows a pro-poor, pro-women and pro-nature approach and applies appropriate science and technology options to address practical problems faced by rural populations in agriculture, food and nutrition. The Foundation works in the areas of Natural Resource Management, Biodiversity, Biotechnology, Food, Nutrition and Livelihood Security and Skill and Capacity Development using modern Information and Communication Technologies. The Fish for All Research and Training Centre established in 2009 by MSSRF in Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu, with the support of Tata Trusts undertakes both action and advocacy for sustainable management and protection of marine and coastal ecosystems. It focuses on three major areas: (i) Sustainable small-scale capture fisheries and resource enhancement (ii) Post-harvest management and value addition (iii) Culture fisheries resource enhancement and management. 

A strategic communication plan to build into the Centre’s work, seeks to facilitate gains made over a decade in community participation, ownership, and stakeholder engagement towards sustainable livelihoods and coastal system conservation. The objectives of this plan are: (i) to strengthen and build greater visibility for the Fish for All Centre’s work (ii) to consolidate the 10-year work and build policy advocacy (iii) branding and marketing 

To implement this plan, it is proposed to take on a communication associate to support implementation of the communication activities for the Fish for All Centre.

Job Description: 
  • Provide focused support on communication from field to policy level about the centre and its project activities ·
  • Interact with project team and stakeholders to identify stories that attracts media and publish them in local magazines or other social media ·
  • Implement Fisher Friend project marketing plan including branding, creating communication tools and a roll-out strategy ·
  • Create communication outputs including policy briefs, AVs, infographics, online presence, maintain social media profile, generate special news and feature stories ·
  • Facilitate workshops related to communication for staff and media ·
  • Document specific project initiatives based on discussions with the Head of the Fish for all Centre
Minimum Qualification and skill sets: 
  • Education and training in media, journalism, communication 
  • Two-three years of experience in media and communication roles 
  • Excellent writing skills in English and in Tamil 
  • Ability to speak / write in another Indian language (Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi) will be an asset 
  • Knowledge of new media tools and approaches required ·
  • Exposure to and knowledge of science, research or the development sector is desirable
  • Ability to work well in a team 
  • Willing to travel to the field sites
Experience:

1.Selected Candidate should spend substantial time in districts of Fish for All Program area than in Chennai

2. Candidates, who are already working in any organization, should bring “No Objection Certificate” from the present employer.
