Development Assistant - Fish for All Research and Training Centre, Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu

The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) was established in 1988 as a not-for profit trust. The foundation aims to accelerate use of modern science for agricultural and rural development for development and dissemination of technology to improve lives and livelihoods of rural and tribal communities. MSSRF follows a pro-poor, pro-women and pro-nature approach and applies appropriate science and technology options to address practical problems faced by rural communities in agriculture food and nutrition.

Fish for All Research and Training Centre, a unique concept of MSSRF adopts a holistic approach in resource management, sustainable livelihood options and disaster preparedness and management. This centre functions as training cum demonstration centre for strengthening existing and diversification of livelihoods and identifying alternative avocation for coastal communities by adopting participatory approach involving all the stakeholders and associated multiple institutions. This programme specially focuses on women, artisans, non-traditional fishers, fish vendors, and fishing laborers among other producer groups.

Job Description: 
  • To assist in fish product development and storage trials at the fish processing centre 
  • To organize, plan and conduct biochemical and microbial analysis of the fish products on a regular basis as required for the project
  • Review and report the results of the analysis in a timely manner in the standard format. 
  • To assist in field work to collect and collate data 
  • To assist in organizing and conducting seminars and training programme / workshops 
  • To assist in preparing promotional and communication materials for the purpose of outreach 
  • To support in reporting and documentation
Minimum Qualification and skill sets: 
  • Experienced / Fresher with hands on experience in biochemical and microbial analysis of food products. 
  • Knowledge on processing, quality control and packaging of fish and fish-based value-added products.
  •  Fluency in English and Tamil 
  • Writing and Reporting 
  • Willingness to travel
Academic Qualifications: 

B.Sc. (Food technology/ Microbiology/Biochemistry)/ B.F.Sc, B. Tech (Food technology, Fish technology/ Food Processing)
