Audio option, boat destination tracking: check out new features of Fisher Friend Mobile Application


A new version of Fisher Friend Mobile Application, that aims to support lives and livelihoods of marine fishing communities across India is now available. The updated version has the option to track the boat’s destination point besides an option to add additional latitude longitude values in Traditional Fishing Ground and Danger zone. The Fisher Friend Mobile Application (FFMA) developed by MSSRF with support of Qualcomm and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) released this 4.8 version with enhancement of GPS in the application recently. The application has been developed to help small scale fishers respond to climate change by introducing adaptive capacities and providing access to scientific information and early warnings.

Also available in the new version, users of FFMA can learn the features of the application through an audio option present available in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu. In the current context, the government’s latest COVID-19 content for fisher folk has got updated under ‘Sea safety and livelihood section’ in Tamil and in English.

FFMA is currently available in nine languages, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Odiya, Bangla and English covering eight coastal states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Kerala, Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka and Goa. Currently, it is being used by 55,000 fisherfolks across 592 villages 59 coastal districts across these states and actively promoted on the field.
