| Usually January to March is the catchment's season of Mathimeen by the fishing Community of this area. Mathimeen is available in plenty during this season. The Fishing communities of Samiyarpettai are able to sell only about 40 to 50 % of their fish harvested. The remaining 50% needs to be processed to be converted into dry fish. It is a seasonal activity, the SHG members largely depend on local money lenders apart from the support they get from the SHG savings and banks as loan. | |

Each SHG requires about Rs. 28,000 to 27,000/- to start this fish vending and Dry Fish business to sell in the up country market. There is a huge market for dry fish vending. The above listed Self Help Groups (Self Help Group is a group of rural poor consist of 10 to 20 persons who have volunteered to organize themselves into a group for eradication of poverty of the members) are from Dindu & Corangi village near Kakinada East Godavari District, Andhrapradesh, India. In order to strengthen/enhance the livelihood opportunities of the members of the SHG and help them to earn a regular income, the idea of starting a micro-enterprise has been facilitated. The group consists of women basically belonging to the fishing community. They earn their income through fish/dry fish vending, Rice/Milk vending, Cloth business, Tailoring, Fancy stores, Kirana shops, Petty shops, Prawn vending etc. They used the funds to run the enterprises and to meet regular household emergency expenses and also to expand their business and their daily average income. |

| The groups have attended Capacity Building Training programs at MSSRF, Kakinada. They have also attended short-term training program on Small Enterprise Management and have learnt the basics of a small business. Now they are venturing into a higher scale of operations to enhance their income earning capacity. This additional income will help them in improving their economic status and in providing their children with better nutritious food, education and housing. | |
