Friends of Swaminathan Australia (FOSA)

Friends of Swaminathan Australia (FOSA) is an extension of the 'Friends' network in Japan and the US. Inspired by the work of renowned scientist and humanist, Professor MS Swaminathan, FOSA was established in 2004 to enable individuals and corporations in Australia to help make a real difference to global poverty by setting up their own micro-credit banks to support environmentally sustainable projects in developing countries in South Asia.

The defining factors in our support are:

  • Delivery of services on the ground are assured by the integrity and experience of MSSRF
  • Sustainability supported by the scientific work of MSSRF, - "from lab. to land".
  • Micro-credit loans are interest-free, with a very high repayment record.
  • All contributions to FOSA are directed to the projects, with all administration being voluntary.

Since its inception, FOSA has supported MSSRF initiatives by providing

  • 35 Micro-Credit Banks allocated to numerous start-up businesses such as dried fish, tapioca, millet, banana leaves, etc
  • Computers for the Wayanard Community Centre in Kerala state.
  • Laptop computer and digital camera for MSSRF field officers
  • Education program for widowed farm families in Vidharbha.

On-going projects involve larger community enterprises, still retaining emphasis on sustainability with all the infrastructure support of training which that entails. (See the"Community Banking" and "Micro-Credit Bank" links at left of this page).
