Today is Teachers Day. In my view, the most important characteristic of a good teacher should be to keep in view the following advice of Gurdev Rabindranath Tagore

“A candle which is not lit, cannot light others. A teacher, who is also not learning, cannot teach others”. To enable teachers to undertake lifelong learning government should make arrangements for periodic refresher training programmes. At the post-graduate level the aim of the teacher should be to give full freedom to the student to imbibe a culture of curiosity, questioning and rationale thinking.
