Biovillage
The concept of biovillage revolves around sustainable use of natural resources and promotion of non-farm livelihood options including value addition to primary products. It aims at a paradigm shift from unskilled to skilled work resulting in the addition of economic value to time and labour. The term biovillage covers all living organisms in the village including humans as well as natural resources such as soil, land, water and biodiversity and uses a human centred approach. Activities in the programme promote value addition of local resources and existing skills of members of the community to enhance livelihood options and income and being implemented on a pilot mode at: Nuaguda, Boliguda and Gunthaguda in Jeypore, Koraput District, Orissa. Efforts are on bringing about an integration of existing resources based on demonstration of forward-backward linkages involving low cost adaptable technologies such as vermicomposting, mushroom production; drudgery reducing devices such as leaf plate stitching; community vegetable garden and group based aquaculture activities; market intervention in processing and stocking of tamarind for sale during favourable market.
